Don't Know Much About Theology

My last three blog postings haven't been about theology overtly. Too often Theology seems confined to the shelves of books. But it is about life itself.

My love for R.E.M., Kierkergaard, and Stromboli. My ambivalent feeling about N.P.R.. My strong animosity towards government largess and Planned Parenthood. Theology is very much about what we love and don't. First, God. Second, Truth.

So here is some theological reflection on the topics covered recently:

1) R.E.M. - I appreciate artful music that is saying something, even if it is hard to unravel its meaning. I don't have to agree with art 100% to appreciate it. Music is the heart-beat of a culture. Music is the one art form that is central in Heaven. So, it has eternal implications.

2) Kierkergaard - He railed against "Shop-Keeping" souls who joined the Church for safety and security. The complacent souls who wanted to keep Christ docile and domesticated. I think dullness is sinful, so I don't agree with his assessment entirely, but there is a lot of truth in what he wrote.

3) Stromboli - Isn't it fantastic that food is both functional and flavorful? Stromboli shows that one does not have to spend a fortune to eat a food that truly delights the palate. It is so simple, but so profoundly good. It is a gift of God, let us be thankful for the small blessings and not hoard them. Instead give thanks and enjoy.

4) N.P.R. - I love N.P.R. in that it has an outward focus and it has the desire to tell stories, promote the aesthetic, and takes a broad view of the world and culture. Non-Libs often are so inward-focused and aggrieved that the soul suffocates by the egocentric emphasis. N.P.R. has a Liberal agenda yet it does seem to be making an attempt to include Conservatives and Christians into the conversation. But let us be honest, many of us Non-Libs really don't care about anyone but ourselves and our tribe. We don't know how to build bridges, we are much better at constructing walls and lobbing grenades.

For the sake of being positive, I will conclude for now and not comment too much further on government largess (anyone else doing what it is doing and it would be called a Ponzi Scheme) and Planned Parenthood (from its eugenic origins until now, an agency of destruction).
