Love Covers A Multitude of Sins
1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
The other night I was microwaving/reheating some cheesesteak meat with tomato sauce. Without thinking, I put the bowl in the microwave uncovered with a paper towel. The meat popped like popcorn and exploded as a road side bomb. I became distracted by something else and by the time I came back to the kitchen, the damage had been done (not the pic above though).
It is not like I never used a microwave before...
I got to thinking about the verse at top. How a paper towel covers the contents of the bowl, keeping it from spewing all over the place when the heat is on. We have all seen gnarly microwaves that induce gagging. Especially the petrified food.
Our current age enjoys splashing sin all over place and it would be quite better to learn the trait of covering private sins and keeping them private. Only if the public welfare is placed at risk does it serve a purpose to promote the sin. For example, David's sin of killing Bathsheba's husband Uriah (much more serious than the adultery even) was a public crime involving murder of a loyal soldier. It involved a nation and the King.
It takes a good deal of character and love to turn away from exposing a person to public scrutiny for private failures. To bite the tongue rather than wag it. Put it on a leash and ask the essential question: Why am I uncovering the sin, what end does it serve? Not typical for pure motives.
The Apostle Peter helps us understand what love is. Not merely a feeling, more than a feeling. Love is an act because mere feelings are fleeting. A good place to start and not end. Actions are the end. Covering a multitude of sins...
