Two-Edged Shaver

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Once a week, I replace my disposable shaver. The edge lasts about a week. I have to buy a specific brand of shaver otherwise I get cut and nicked (see above for my brand). The shavers come with a clear safety plastic cover that clips over the blade. This morning when I went to shave, as it has happened before, I had not removed the safety cover.

What results in such situations is that it looks like the shaver is shaving because the shaving creams gets removed. But due to a lack of application of the blade, the whiskers remain uncut. The writer of Hebrews, some think it was Paul (the writer is not identified), employs a metaphor that the World of God is a two-edged sword. Take off the plastic, remove the sheath. Pick up the Bible and read. Other writings are good and fine but nothing substitutes for the Scriptures.

Those who want to de-militarize descriptions of the faith are in a real tough spot because the Bible writers used such comparisons all over the place. Dealing with the sin nature is a war of all wars. Are not external wars in the world just the outward manifestations of the wars within? Our weapon to win is the Word of God. Not outward observance but inward transformation. Surgery, of the Soul, by the hand of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, the shaving cream is just getting moved around.
