Treasuries of the Snow

Job 38:22

Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow...?

I know that my time is short to write about last Monday's snow. Like a snowflake melting on the tongue, the moment is passing quickly. I was hoping for a blizzard sometime this year. The best shot I have at getting a blizzard at this point with the warming weather is at Dairy Queen. Maybe next year.

Monday's snow kind of came out of nowhere. Even at 5:30 on Monday morning, local WGAL weatherman Matt Ritter admitted that he was not sure what the storm was going to do. That was refreshing. It is always interesting when weather broadcasters act so sure when they issue their five day forecast. Grandma's 80th birthday party picnic is coming up on Saturday...want to know if is going to rain? Stick your head out of the window Saturday morning. Otherwise, it is just a crap shoot. If you actually check to see how accurate their predictions are, you'll see that the Groundhog Day prediction is almost as accurate. The Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg got bitten by a groundhog during this year's ceremony of winter prognostication. Not sure what that portends. Probably means that you shouldn't stick your hand into a groundhog's cage; they have teeth like Ginsu Knives.

With school-day snows, I remember when as a kid I used to wait for that magical 8-5-4 to be announced as "off" by children's program personality Captain Noah in Philly. In the Philadelphia-area, there are so many schools, that they don't cancel by name...instead it is by number. Kind of like a lottery. As part of my extensive research for this blog entry I discovered that Captain Noah and his wife are still alive. The show got got rubbed out like a mob hit over a decade ago but it was cool to remember him and his show. Found out that he likes whiskey.

What I like about snow days now that I am older (we had off on Monday) is that when we do have off, it is kind of like a bonus Sabbath...sort of like a Baker's Dozen of doughnuts. In my world, where I always feel like I am running around like a man trying to catch falling plates, a snow day kind of enforces a shut-down and a slowing down. I need more silence and less noise in my life. And, a snow day is a treasure, even if we do have to pay it back in June.
